While Michael was deployed in Afghanistan, his base was hit by rockets, which led to him suffering a shattered leg and jaw along with a traumatic brain injury. He was awarded the purple heart and spent over two years in Walter Reed Hospital, making him one of the longest-term patients at the hospital. Michael was paired with Maci in September of 2016 and said she fits into his family like she is supposed to be there. Michael’s family says they know Maci is the product of much labor and love.
