Gerry Petrone, RN/BSN, retired from Haven Hospice in 2007 where she held various positions including retiring as the Administrator of the Chiefland, FL branch, but continues to serve on the Community Advisory Board today. Gerry received her RN degree from Pilgrim State Hospital in New York and her BSN from the University of Florida. She has been dedicated over the years working with the amazing German Shepherds at Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs. This endeavor began in September 2010 when Gerry began fostering those nearly ready for pairing. All in all, she fostered over 20 dogs. Gerry joined the board in March 2014. Her BOD oversight and roles include providing bereavement support for either those who have lost their service dog or for the loss of a recipient, serving on the Recipient Relations team where she assists with quarterly questionnaires and oversees first aid training for the staff.
In March of 2020, Gerry was involved in a life altering motorcycle accident that left her permanently disabled. Her husband died at the scene. She was severely injured, hospitalized and wheelchair bound for weeks. Guardian Angels gave her the gift of healing in the form of a service dog – Tank, a beautiful German Shepherd trained to mitigate the permanent challenges she was left with. Being on the other side has given her a new awareness of the importance and value of a service dog. It is life changing as well as life saving.
