National Legacy Day is Wednesday, May 21. It’s the perfect time to reflect on the values and causes that matter most to you, and how you can continue to support them for generations to come.
Two of the simplest yet most powerful ways to establish your legacy are through bequests (wills and trusts) and beneficiary designations. Creating a lasting impact could be as easy as adding your signature!
At Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs, we would be honored if you considered including our organization in your legacy giving plans. Your support could help us continue our lifesaving mission and provide hope, healing, and independence to those in need.
Here’s how you can make a difference.
Bequests (Wills and Trusts)
What is a bequest?
This is a gift made through your will or trust that designates a specific amount or percentage of your estate to be given to a person or entity, such as a nonprofit organization.
This is the most common form of legacy giving—approximately 90% of all legacy gifts are made through bequests—and it’s incredibly easy to set up.
How to set up a bequest:
New Will or Trust:
You can create these legal documents with the help of your attorney or by using online platforms—many of which are low-cost or even free.
Existing Will or Trust:
If you have an existing estate plan, you can add an amendment (often called a Codicil or Trust Amendment). In many cases, this can be done without extensive legal costs, though requirements may vary by state.
Helpful Tip:
Please consult your attorney for advice that aligns with your state’s laws. Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs can provide you with sample bequest language to make the process even easier.
Beneficiary Designations
What is a beneficiary designation?
This is a straightforward way to leave a legacy by naming individuals—and/or charitable organizations like Guardian Angels—as the recipients of your financial assets.
Assets that typically allow for beneficiary designations include:
- Life insurance policies
- Retirement accounts (IRA, 401(k), 403(b))
- Bank accounts and CDs
- Annuities
How to update or add a beneficiary:
Request a “Change of Beneficiary” form from your financial institution or account provider. On the form, or when opening a new account, name Guardian Angels Medical Service Dogs as a beneficiary—either partially or in full, based on your preference.
Keep Us Informed:
If you do decide to include Guardian Angels in your plans, please let us know. We would love the opportunity to thank you and honor your generous commitment.
